Bierce was the tenth child of thirteen.
Place of Birth: Horse Cave (settlement), Ohio, America
The family moved to Indiana whilst Bierce was a child. They
settled first in Warsaw, then in Elkhart.
His father's farmhouse library was Bierce's "most
important early educational influence"
His uncle General Lucius Verus Bierce influenced Bierce
greatly.

After the withdrawal of seven southern states on the 15th of
April 1861 the President (Lincoln)wanted to preserve the union so called for
75000 volunteers.
On the 19th of April 1861 Bierce joined the army in the
Ninth Indiana Infantry, Company C as a private. After his first battle at Philippi
and 3 months service he re-enlisted as a sergeant and served in West Virginia.
He was made 2nd lieutenant in 1862 and a year later, after Stones River he was
made first lieutenant.

He served as a topographical engineer when staff of General W.B.Hazen.
On 23rd of June 1864, Bierce received a head wound from a Confederate bullet at Kennesaw Mountain. He returned to action in September and was engaged in the Franklin and Nashville Campaign.
He resigned from the army on the 25th of January 1865 due to bouts of dizziness and blackouts caused by the head wound.
He then became a treasury agent in Alabama.
He joined Hazen on an expedition into Indian Territory in 1866 and made maps of the land they passed through. In 1867, when they reached San Francisco, Bierce became an employee of the US Mint and so therefore stayed in San Francisco.
