Causes of the American Civil War

  • Arguments over tariffs on goods imported and exported.
  • High interest rates for the Southern banks.
  • Sectionalism - nations were reffered to as sections.
  • A slower growing population than in the Southern states compared to the Northern states which lessened their political power.
  • The Southern states believed that state authority should come before federal. - Stat Rights.
  • Slavery was a key part of the economics in the South. Plantation owners were generally the ones who owned slaves. A large majority of Northerners did not approve of slavery. A person opposed to slavery was called a 'abolitionist'.
